Chong,
I've been using UV light with my tanks. Its function is to HELP prevent external disease and to control algae. it's level of effectiveness is depend on the flow rate. The faster the flow rate the less effective it will be. I am very happy with the result.
UV light has been a debatable subject. Some would say that it's just a waste. I use it with my tanks (65 watts for the total of 300 gallons of water) for "Peace of mind".
It's quite costly and the bulb will need to be replaced every 9 months or so for it to be effective. I strongly believe that preventive is the best treatment for any disease. Therefore, if I can afford it, why not?
