Hi guys/ladies,

I hope that you all can comment on my findings after my two weeks of experiment and conclusion. I tried my tanks in different ways of filtering. One tank with external, one with internal and one only with a powerful air pump with two outlets. Following is my findings.

1. External pump (EP) seems to be the best in terms of clarity, cleaning, maintainence etc but there are many hidden problems. If one keep cleaning the EP whenever you change water, fine ie once or twice a week. If one change water but did not clean the EP till later date, just imagine what is hidding below all those cotton etc. For eg, the Ehiem 2228. The lowest level that contain the dirty water and sh*t has the highest ammonia level if you test it. Though good bacteria are doing some job but just imagine that the water from the tank are going thru all those dirty sh*t water then back into the tank again. Whenever we put clean aged water into the tank, within mins, it has to go thru those DS water again. Are we providing the best water chemistry for the aro to live in? Though nothing happen, my aro did not develop much at all but usual.

2. Internal pump (IP) is doing the same job but required often cleaning and slightly messy job. By doing a little more work, imagine that the water in the tank are full of clean water that can be seen by naked eyes, if it is clean without any hidden dirty water. Are we providing a better environment? My Xback return to normal and did not station at one corner anymore. His/her appetite get better each day and finally, I could see the rate of growing.

3. Air pump (AP) has two outlets and were attached to two sponges to do the filtering job. Additional job like scopping the sh*t with a net (those big ones)is needed. Water still clear each day with water changing every two days. Guess what? My chilli red seems to be the most happiest among all. Fantastic appetite, good grow rate, very healthy and active swimming round the tank and most important, colour develop was double the rate since the experiment.

Please take note that all took the same food. Have water change at the same time. Isn't the traditional, simple and cheap setup actually providing the best water chemistry or environment for any fish to live in. CLEAR water doesn't mean CLEAN water with EP, IP will be much better without hidden dirty water. AP will immediately tells you the water standard without delay and guaranteed that clear water means clean water.

I apologise for such a long winded message but hope that you guys can take the time to read and comment. Thanks.

Regards
ML
