Hi ML,
Me too have kept tankmates with arowanas before which inludes:
1) Giant Gourame
2) Silver Dollars
3) Red parrots
4) Plecos
5) Catfish
6) Jiu Jie Long(Mandarin)
7) Crown loaches
Gold fishes
9) Silvers
and many others
And now, I have none. Probably the same reasons as yours, they dirtied the tank water, distract the fish and worst still(main reasons) causes my arowanas to get injured for whatever reasons, so all are gone, I now have a bare tank with only one arowana in each tank.
But on the other hand,sometimes, some arowanas need companion in reverse while on other occasions got stressed up by them. I think either one big pleco in one tank might be good or completely left alone.
I have seen my red parrot try to nip at my reds' tail before. But I have not seen my arowana getting stressed/jumpy because of tankmates removal.
Also, I feel that arowanas do get irritated and simply try to get a bite at any moving things, hungry or not.
